It's a small oven that sits on your counter and plugs into a standard outlet. Most combine convection heating with a toast setting, and the current generation adds air frying. The useful distinction from a plain toaster oven is the fan: circulating hot air is what lets one appliance both toast bread and crisp a tray of potatoes.
For most weeknight cooking, close to it. A 12 L countertop oven handles up to two baking pans at a time, and our 28 L countertop oven can fit an entire chicken or up to three trays. What it can't do is a large roast or a full turkey, so think of it as the oven you reach for daily rather than the one you use on holidays.
